Algoretic: Catholics, Jews, and Muslims Unite to Observe AI

Every time a new technology emerges, two basic trends occur: techno-optimists and the techno-pessimists. The former overflow with enthusiasm and award the new invention a kind of panacea with respect to its application to a specific sector or to the whole of reality.

The latter are dramatically and hastily disturbed by the innovations, in many cases uncomfortable by the changes in learning and routines that they cause. From the earliest times, this dilemma challenge every generation.

Today, this question is verified especially in the field of bioethics and in the multiplication of information and communication technologies. Many will remember, for example in the field of education, the ongoing discussions about the use in the classroom calculatorsaccess to Internet and the use of mobile phone.

It has recently made its appearance ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) which can be roughly translated as a pre-trained generative transformer which is a procedure that simulates the human typing mode and is capable of answering questions and having “conversations”, taking texts from the Internet.

Artificial Intelligence: ChatGPT, popularization, magic and risks

In this way, ChatGPT is the first great application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with a massive reach on the web. According to some specialists, AI could shape the decisions of individuals without their knowledge and give abusive power to those who control it.

Here then the dilemma that we indicated above reappears, and that beyond its approval or rejection en bloc in the face of any technological innovation or of any other order, we must carry out a responsible reflection.

Actually, we must carry out this exercise in relation to all spheres of life: science, economy, politics, art, sports… and any other dimension of existence that we want to indicate. In other words, all of them have to be respected in their autonomy and in their own dynamism, but without absolutizing their specific, albeit limited, contribution to avoid his deification.

Also, religious beliefs must adjust to this rule, assuming these realities in a critical dialogue, providing them with their proposal of meaning and transcendence, and thus contribute to do not idolize what is relative even if it seems efficient and useful to us, avoiding perverse uses with inhumane effects.

Observe Artificial Intelligence

Applying these criteria to the new technologies, which work through algorithms (set of automated rules), an ethical evaluation is essential. This is how the neologism arises “algoretic”, that is, a ethical development of artificial intelligence.

Laura Acción: “The problem arises when artificial intelligence interferes with democracy, health or justice”

In response to this challenge, at the beginning of 2023, three representatives of the Catholicism, Judaism and of the scope Muslims signed is Rome The document Call for the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence parachute promote “algoretics”.

The document recalls the framework of fundamental values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, highlighting the importance of education that will be deeply impacted by the availability of new technological resources, to which access without inequalities must be guaranteed.

Catholicism, Judaism my islamism they signed the document in Rome Call for the Ethics of Artificial Intelligenceto promote the “algoretic”

This brings to the fore the need to incorporate an ethical approach that accompanies each stage of the technology production cycle from the beginning.

Also – the statement continues – it is not enough to probably only in the user responsibility In the end, I do not trust the moral sensitivity of those who design algorithms to evaluate the correct use of digital systems.

From another perspective, although convergent, The concern of governments, technicians, scientists, and of the technology companies themselves so that human values are controlled and present in the development of AI.

In this regard there is already one proposal for a regulation of the european parliament by which standards are established in the field of AI capable of harmonizing technological progress, business development, the protection of people and democracy.
