31 years after the attack on the Israeli embassy, and among the sound of the bells of the Mater Admirabilis church, a few meters from the corner of Arroyo and Suipacha, where the embassy was located, the act was held in tribute to the 29 victims of the terrorist attack, which today continues unpunished.
The event was attended by the Israeli ambassador to the country, Eyal Sela, and other authorities from the Jewish entities. In addition, in the midst of a strict security operation, were the Chief of Staff, Agustín Rossi; and the Ministers of Justice, Martín Soria (who also spoke); Education, Jaime Perzcyc; and Labor, Kelly Olmos. On the other, some leaders of the opposition: the Minister of Government of the City, Jorge Macri; the Secretary of International Relations of the City, Fernando Straface; the radical leaders like the deputy Facundo Manes and the senator Carolina Losada; and the former PRO senator, Federico Pinedo, among others.
The chancellor, Santiago Cafiero (who was in Uruguay) and the Minister of the Interior, Eduardo “Wado” de Pedro, were supposed to be able to participate, but they withdrew from attending, as did the Buenos Aires chief of staff, Felipe Miguel.
As for the addresses, the hardest speech was that of Alberto Kupersmid, who experienced the attack and helped look for survivors among the rubble that day. Kupersmid spoke to “politics” and “Justice” for “the lack of response to clarify the facts.”
“What did they do, what are we going to do?” he asked them. And he asked that the law that requires that the history of the attack be studied in schools be complied with, to “keep the memory”, he wondered. And he added: “What happened to the investigation, to the follow-up subcommittee, to the local connection, to the purchase of the truck, of the explosives?”
In turn, Minister Soria spoke of “the responsibility of the Argentine State for not preventing, not investigating, not punishing the guilty.” And he fired against “some powers”, for Justice and the lack of convicts.
He also blamed Hezbollah for the attack, but avoided holding Iran directly responsible, unlike Israel’s position. He only blamed Iran for the “lack of collaboration”.
“The assumption of responsibility should not be a consolation, but a necessary step to twist the inertia of Justice and impunity,” he said.
“We have reactivated, re-hierarchized, removed from the degradation in which they had submerged the special investigation unit of the attack that occurred two years later, the AMIA, which historically worked in the Ministry of Justice of the Nation. Thus, we assume a commitment to clarify the fact, ”he concluded.
